Vernon plant gross receipts tax proposal outlined
Former Vermont state senator Frederick J. Fayette proposed a gross receipts tax for the 540,000 kilowatt Vermont Yankee plant in Vernon. He suggested a 5 percent tax yielding about $1 million annually, with headlined returns to Vernon to cover local costs, and the rest to the state general fund. Vermont Yankee's Albert Cree noted a 1 percent tax would also generate about $1 million on paper and favored taxing bulk power facilities only. Burlington Electric Light Co. opposed any utility tax, warning it would raise consumer rates and defeat low-cost power goals.
