Colleges seek state help to avert private Vermont crisis
Ten private college presidents from Vermont met with the governor's blue ribbon higher education committee in Middlebury. They warned of an academic low mood and a looming enrollment drop across small private colleges. Leaders supported funding student aid, expanding the Vermont Student Association Program, and reducing lump sums to state colleges and UVM. Senator Smallwood and Senate Finance Chairman Bedford backed student funding. Windham College President Winslow called it an imminent downturn. A New England sample of 13 small colleges showed declining enrollments in June.
