Vermont moves to tighten radiation controls at Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corp by urging the Public Service Board to order immediate installation of equipment to cut radioactive discharges. Armed guards placed on some U S flights

President Nixon announced a broad anti hijacking plan adding armed plainclothes guards on selected U S domestic and overseas flights. The program funds come from small tax increases on international fares and domestic ticket excise, with guards drawn from Secret Service FAA and trained military personnel.

Bennington College names eight new faculty appointments

The college announces eight new appointments to its faculty for the 1970-71 year. Eric Bentley will serve as writer in residence, bringing a career as English theatre critic, author and professor at Columbia and Harvard. Bentley holds degrees from Oxford and Yale and is a Guggenheim fellow and editor of major theatre works. Other appointments include Maurice Breslow in drama.

The forecast calls for generally fair conditions today with a high in the 60s. Tonight will be cooler with lows in the 40s. Sunday brings increasing cloudiness and another high in the 60s.

Arabs may free hostages today hijacking crisis in Jordan

Guerrillas holding over 250 hostages aboard three planes in the Jordanian desert released 23 on Friday night and said the rest would be brought to Amman soon. The 23 included 21 BOAC passengers and an American couple from Knoxville, Tenn. They planned to depart Amman for Beirut Saturday as part of a broader exchange offer involving Arabs in European prisons and Israeli prisoners. The Red Cross reported torture of captives and dynamite threats loomed over the desert airstrip where the planes were parked.

Democrats Dismiss Nixon Appeal In War Toward Election

President Nixon sent Congress an 11 000 word appeal urging quick action on draft welfare electoral reform revenue sharing foreign trade crime pollution control housing and education Democrats in Congress dismissed it as Nixon’s opening shot in the 1970 campaign House and Senate leaders criticized the timing and urged action while Republicans offered cautious assessments observers expect some welfare reform and trade measures to pass this year but draft reform is unlikely to move this session The Senate will vote soon on direct presidential election but outcome remains uncertain

Agnew Attacks Negativism During Western Campaign

Vice President Spiro T. Agnew urged listeners to ignore the “nattering nabobs of negativism” as he campaigned in California with George Murphy Ronald Reagan and Bob Wilson.
