Soviets Warn Cuba Attack May Start World War

The Soviet government told the United States a Cuba attack could trigger a world nuclear war. It urged U.S. restraint, said it would defend any peace loving state if attacked, and noted it would deploy forces to high readiness as a precaution. The statement also called for Berlin settlement and removal of the occupation regime.

Fugitive Spy Soblen Dies in London Hospital

Robert A Soblen, a New York psychiatrist and wartime Soviet spy, died in Hillingdon Hospital after an overdose and ensuing brain damage. He had fled deportation to the United States from London after a 10 week legal fight, with his wife Dr Dina Soblen at his side.

44 Are Killed As Jet Tanker Hits Mountain

A KC135 tanker with 44 aboard crashed into Mt Kit Carson near Spokane Washington in near zero visibility while en route from Ellsworth Air Force Base to Fairchild Air Force Base. Fifty passengers included 39 Air Force airmen, one civilian, and four crewmen. Thirty three bodies were recovered by nightfall as rescue work continued.

Two Young Brothers Die In Williston House Fire

In Williston Vermont a two year old Dana Gover and his three year old brother Duane perished in a farm house fire. Their mother Viola Gover 30 baked treats for a party while father Philip Gover 30 worked in a barn. Fire trapped the youngsters on the second floor as flames engulfed the two story frame house destroying the home and all belongings.
