Gov. Richard Snelling will actively support a bill to pay elective abortions from state funds when federal money is unavailable. The statement came through Social Welfare Commissioner David Wilson at the Governors Commission on the Status of Women, while Snelling attended a national conference. The move drew predictable opposition from anti abortion groups who warn taxpayers would bear the cost. Wilson also admitted Vermont erred by using Medicaid funds to sterilize minors, spending about $21,000 for 35 youths last year. all consents were obtained and only two were male. The state lacked authority to reimburse doctors, but the issue involved no federal repayment.
