In Saigon 750 pupils at Chu Van An high school defied President Diem by striking and barricading the campus. Troops dragged students into trucks and jailed them as the military governor warned parents of strict action. The government blamed Viet Cong guerrillas for the unrest.
In downtown Vientiane fighting broke out between right wing and Pathet Lao forces. One Pathet Lao soldier was killed and another wounded, with grenades and gunfire exchanged. A Filipino hospital worker and a Laotian civilian were reported killed. Neutralist Premier Prince Souvanna Phouma postponed his UN trip.
Salem Massachusetts AP reports the ninth unsolved strangling in Greater Boston in 15 months revived fear after the December 1962 slaying. Victim Eve lyn Corbin, 51, a blonde divorcee living alone, was found in her apartment strangled with nylon stockings. A medical examiner notes two stockings wrapped around her neck and others cut on the bed.
Public school teachers in New York halted their threatened strike and approved a two year agreement that raises pay. The deal adds about 580 to most salaries, raising top pay to 11025 by July 1 1964 while minimum remains unchanged as over a million students begin the fall term in the city s 850 public schools.
Ben Mont Papers begins its first rail shipment in two years with three to four loaded cars at noon from the Bennington plant. The move starts a six mile link to White Creek NY, as Jay Wulfson plans to run the Rutland line with a $950000 Vermont Railway Corp. start up and five incorporators.
WASHINGTON AP John Gronouski 43 Wisconsin tax commissioner was named by President Kennedy to be postmaster general succeeding J Edward Day who resigned Aug 9. Until Senate acts on the nomination Sidney W Bishop continues as acting postmaster general, a position he has held since Day departed.
The United States rushed food supplies to about 300000 homeless refugees fleeing four days of forest fires in Parana Brazil. Officials hope rain from Argentina will end the fires which may have killed 250 or more. Brazil releases 1 million dollars in federal funds as rescue and firefighting efforts continue.
State troopers acting under Gov. George Wallace barred Negroes from public schools in Birmingham Mobile and Tuskegee despite federal desegregation orders. Huntsville saw its first grade pupils admitted as two children entered a previously segregated elementary school. Predawn executive orders kept segregation in the three cities while alerting National Guard units in Birmingham.
A 34 year old Venezuelan woman, Maria Cuervo de Prieto, gave birth to five premature babies in Maracaibo Hospital. The quintuplets were weighed from 3 pounds 1.4 ounces to 4 pounds 3 ounces and placed in incubators with a skimmed milk diet. The father Efren Prieto and the governor of Zulia state promised government aid and potential housing. The birth marks the third quintuplet set in the Western Hemisphere.
Sen. Everett Dirksen announced he will vote for ratification of the limited nuclear test ban treaty and said President Kennedy plans to issue a statement addressing concerns about the pact. Key senators in both parties expressed support or opposition as hearings and votes approach, with the measure needing two thirds support to pass.
Vice President Lyndon B Johnson arrived in Turku Finland in foggy weather to begin a stop on his Scandinavian tour. One Finnish chauffeur died in a road accident early today casting a somber mood over the trip. Johnson appeared tired and subdued while city officials greeted him and there was no crowd due to a one hour lead in schedule. Johnson and Mrs Johnson flew separately from Helsinki to Turku.
