Peregrine falcons return aided by Cornell captive breeding
At Cornell University, three pairs of peregrine falcons produced 20 fledglings this spring, a major step toward reintroducing the raptors to eastern North America. Dr. Tom J. Cade leads the program, which aims to breed large numbers in captivity and release them into the wild to restore the species degraded by DDT. The effort envisions 200 or more young per year from 30 pairs and gradual field adaptation before reintroduction next spring near Ithaca.
