Vermont fire officials battled three arson fires over the weekend from Shaftsbury to the New York line. Hunter Kills Companion Mistaken For Bear In Vermont
A 24 year old Greenfield man, Anthony Lopresti, was killed when his hunting companion Emory Ward shot him believing he was aiming at a bear. The incident occurred near Stratton Mountain while bear season had opened. Ward, 21, fired a 30 30 rifle, and Lopresti died at the scene. State Police and medical examiner confirmed the fatal shot.

West German charter jet crashes near Hamburg killing 21
A BAC111 twin engine charter jet carrying 121 West German vacationers to Malaga, Spain, crashed after attempting to land on a highway near Hamburg.
