Board Denies Mother's Request For Grade 1 Admission
The elementary school board overrode a member and refused to allow Ernest Carpenter, nearly six, to enter Grade 1 this fall. Tests showed he was not ready, so the board urged Kindergarten instead. Superintendent Kelley said most six-year-olds entering Grade 1 have attended Kindergarten, a point Mrs. Carpenter disputed due to working daytime. The board proposed St Peter's Kindergarten to avoid crossing Main Street to the babysitter. A dissenting member, Anthony Pello, argued the board usurped parental responsibility and warned against overreach while Stewart Allen criticized the tests for insufficient consideration.
