Johnson Drives Democratic Campaign Across Midwest
President Johnson, not a candidate, headlines a Labor Day swing through Michigan and Ohio with 20 speeches in 13 hours. He urges voters to back a pro Great Society agenda, praises public service, and promotes Democrats as the path to a better future while pressing for a favorable Congress in November. He visits Detroit Battle Creek Dayton Columbus and Lancaster, greeting large crowds and shaking thousands of hands. A brief scuffle with peace protesters in Dayton is noted but used to emphasize his call for youth to pursue public service.
