Attorneys General plan canal suit in four states
Iowa Attorney General Richard C. Turner said he and three other state AGs will file a U.S. Supreme Court suit to block signing of the Panama Canal treaty. The suit seeks a temporary ruling and demands a copy of the pact, arguing Article IV, Section 3 of the Constitution requires Congressional approval for any canal handover in 2000.

Anita hits Mexico coast as hurricane slams Gulf

Panamanian man self immolates over canal treaty protest
A Panamanian man opposed to the new Panama Canal treaty burned himself to death in front of the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm. Leopoldo Aragon died at Karolinska Hospital after suffering burns over 90 percent of his body. He told a Swedish TV reporter he acted to force a plebiscite on the treaty. The signing is set for Sept. 7 by President Carter and General Omar Torrijos.
