HEW admits no Medicaid mills control and scope
Washington HEW says it cannot measure how much Medicaid funds flow to so called Medicaid mills and rules on clinic standards. Hearings show mills operate in poor city areas, some owned by doctors or businessmen, with doctors giving a large share of fees to management. HEW assigns provider numbers, not names, obscuring mills from audits. 70 percent of funds go to hospitals and nursing homes, with physicians services about 10 percent and pharmacies seven percent.
