Court Martial Ordered For Two Evans Officers
The U S Navy ordered the court martial of Cmdr Albert S McLemore and Lt jg Ronald C Ramsey of the destroyer Evans for negligence and dereliction of duty after the June 3 collision with the Australian carrier Melbourne that sank the Evans and killed 74 sailors. The trial set to begin around Sept 10 at Subic Bay will address serious charges with potential sentences including hard labor and forfeiture of pay. Ramsey faces seven specific errors including failing to awaken the captain and seeking guidance on course.

In New Haven a chain reaction crash on Interstate 91 north of the city left at least three dead including one child. A truck slammed into two cars starting the pileup as 11 more vehicles, four trucks among them, became involved. Fire engulfed a section of pavement and rescue crews searched wreckage while traffic was rerouted and ramps closed.

Long Trail feat makes 87-year-old record holder
Dr. Fred Luehring of Swarthmore Pa hiked the 261 mile Long Trail in Vermont finishing Monday at Camel's Hump 4083 feet. The former Princeton basketball coach and Minnesota athletic director is 87, making him the oldest man to complete the entire Vermont Long Trail.

Four thieves tried to break into Green Mountain Race Track vault Monday night aiming at about $1 million in pari mutuel handle. They handcuffed two watchmen, one freed and alerted police, thieves fled before vault access. The vault door would have held only about $2,000 in change. Green Mountain’s Sunday and Monday take totaled around $1 million but was not in the vault.
