Egypt Syria and Libya vote on Arab federation referendum
More than 10 million Egyptians Syrians and Libyans voted in a referendum backing a loose three nation federation called the Arab answer to Israeli aggression. The tripartite union would join over 40 million people across 1.1 million square miles and create a presidential council cabinet and court with unanimous decisions. Meanwhile Israel reviewed Soviet policy amid rumors of a rapprochement and reports from Beirut claimed an assassination attempt wounded Iraqi President Ahmed Hassan al Bakr during a palace ceremony. Clashes in Gaza City and Khan Yunis were reported as Israeli troops enforced curfews.
