Israeli workers across airports docks and factories walked out to protest new reforms, including higher prices taxes and a 45 percent devaluation of the pound. Vietnamese hijackers seek asylum in U S or France

Four Vietnamese hijackers who seized an Air Vietnam DC-3 over Singapore are seeking asylum in the United States or France. Singapore has not yet decided their fate, despite Radio Hanoi claiming Singapore would return them for crimes in Vietnamese airspace. The men spoke to officials by radio in Chinese and broken English after surrender negotiations at Selector airbase.

U.S. experts say arms embargo will not bother South Africa

U.S. experts say a U.N. arms embargo will barely affect South Africa's military, despite African calls for a strict ban and asset restrictions. Officials note Pretoria is increasingly self sufficient, with a 1.9 billion weapons budget and 75 percent self reliance in basic arms, while a 368000 strong mobilizable force remains largely white.

VIDA names O Leary as VIDA chair at annual meeting

O Leary, president of Green Mountain Furniture Co in North Bennington, was elected chairman of the Vermont Industrial Development Authority at the Sugarbush Inn meeting. The Bennington County Industrial Corp received the first VIDA achievement award for job creation and unemployment drop from 11 percent in 1974 to about 7 percent. VIDA approved $186,000 in loans to Triplex Industries for a St Albans plant employing about 75. $228,680 to Twincraft for a Winooski plant employing about 55. Both plants will manufacture thermostats safes and scented soaps and are expected to expand employment in the future.

Curtis denies Sun report on stepping down as DNC chair

Democratic National Chairman Kenneth Curtis rejected a Baltimore Sun story claiming he would resign before year’s end. In Bennington, he said he has not committed to a four year term yet valued his relationship with President Carter and declined to predict his status after the 1978 off year elections.
