Wide Los Angeles brush fire prompts evacuations
A major area fire burned through 1500 acres in hills and canyons near an expensive seaside neighborhood forcing about 500 people to evacuate. Firefighters fought to protect homes as flames reached 12 foot brush and 50 foot high tongues aided by water bombing helicopters. City and county crews, along with Ventura and Civil Defense units, battled shifting Santa Ana winds as roads including US 1 and Topanga Canyon Blvd were closed. About 54 homes in Castellamare and 300 in Fernwood were evacuated.
