Dirksen Campaign Trail Keeps Senator in Limelight
Senator Everett Dirksen shuttled between Illinois and Washington during his bid for a third term, drawing broader attention than rival Rep. Sidney R. Yates. Kennedy campaigned for Yates in Chicago and Springfield, while Dirksen awaited a Cuban crisis briefing at O’Hare. Polls favored Dirksen, who aligns with Kennedy on some issues but opposes much domestic policy. downstate Illinois voters see Yates promoting social security linked medical care. Illinois voters also choose state treasurer, public instruction chief, a Supreme Court clerk, and 24 congressional seats, with a net loss of one seat via reapportionment.
