Shaftsbury Key Precinct Election Test for NBC
Shaftsbury has been selected as a Key Precinct for early election analysis on November 3. NBC will receive fast totals via a phone line installed at Cole Hall, though the public cannot contact the polling place or obtain results by this method. Junior and senior PSAT testing in Room 5 drew mixed reactions as results approach scholastic semifinals. Arlington girls tied Wilmington 1 1 and then beat Burr and Burton 4 1, while Arlington Jrs won 1 0 and Eagles added a 4 0 league win. Proctor defeated Arlington 3 2 in the state playoffs as shop class projects and family news mix with school life in this issue.

Iron Kettle keeps up to 300 families with dry seasons
In Shaftsbury the Iron Kettle watering trough near U.S. 7 sustains about 300 local families during extreme dryness. Walter Ready ferries 20 to 30 milk cans daily to supply water for 1,300 chickens and household use, keeping his line for the trough lengthy as wells run dry. The spring also serves the restaurant and nearby Hawkins house, though its flow sometimes slows without explanation.
