Supreme Court to rule on Kent State shootings case

The Supreme Court agreed to hear a Kent State University students suit claiming Ohio National Guardsmen were trained to force fatal action to suppress civilian disorder. Charges dismissed against Gen. Lavelle by Air Force secretary

A former Air Force Academy graduate who accused Gen. John D. Lavelle of illegal bombing argues the administration is granting amnesty by not court martialing the general. Air Force Secretary Robert Seamans dismissed the charges, saying Lavelle was punished enough. Lavelle lost command of the 7th Air Force in Southeast Asia and retired after revealing he ordered two bombing raids outside White House restrictions. Terrill, a 1st Lt., criticized the decision as a slap in the face to soldiers and claimed the administration forgives disobedience. Seamans insisted Lavelle’s punishment upheld discipline and warned that commanders must not condone improper duties.
