Casals Conducts Marlboro Summers A Storied Low Key Icon
From 1960 to 1973 Pablo Casals performed at the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont each summer. He arrived after July began and stayed about until August. His appearances were unpredictable and tickets often sold out in advance. Casals, small in stature, conducted from a green pillow with a handrail for support while audiences and musicians watched in awe. He rose, gestured, hummed, and showed varying expressions as he led. He disliked photography due to noise and distraction.
