Nursing home permit denied despite board critique of bylaws

Bennington Village Zoning Board of Appeals denied the variance needed to build a 100 bed nursing home on Putnam Street area zoned R-1. The board faulted the project plans and landscaping details as incomplete while urging the town Planning Commission to set aside areas for health needs. Key figures included Bruce Levinsky, Village Trustee Joseph Pello, and Bennington selectman Joseph Higgins. The panel lamented the lack of specific nursing home provisions in current zoning and noted adequate water and sewer capacity from nearby lines.
