Kennedy panned in Britain for remarks on Ireland
About 60 Conservative MPs signed a motion denouncing Sen Edward Kennedy for urging the United States Congress to press Britain to withdraw troops from Northern Ireland. The House of Commons called Kennedy’s suggestion an unfortunate outburst and said it does not reflect views of responsible American leaders. Prime Minister Faulkner in Belfast called the proposal deplorable and said Kennedy’s remarks reveal prejudice and ignorance about Northern Ireland. Lord Balniel condemned the remarks as well. British papers also criticized Kennedy’s statements.
