Teachers learn what makes local industry tick in session

Tuesday’s Business and Industry Education Day drew teachers from North Bennington to Bennington to tour local plants like Stanley Works Eagle Square and hear executives such as Paul DeConinck discuss manufacturing shifts. They toured firms, attended seminars, and gained insight into environmental policy and Act 250, with lunch funded by firms and a federal grant. Harrison Moore, regional U.S. Chamber of Commerce representative, opened the afternoon talks.

Veto blocks arms embargo on South Africa over Namibia

United States, Britain and France vetoed a Security Council resolution proposing a mandatory arms embargo on South Africa to push withdrawal from Namibia. The 10-3 vote opposed the measure with Italy and Japan abstaining. SWAPO condemned the veto as protecting an illegal regime, while sources said diplomacy would continue. The sponsors included Benin, Guyana, Libya, Pakistan, Panama, Romania and Tanzania.

New England Solar Lab Site Delayed By ERDA Inspection

Boston United Press International reports the national solar energy research laboratory plan is delayed three months for site inspections at 19 locations nationwide. Opening pushed back six months with interim Cambridge MIT site and two permanent options in Westboro Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Initial $15 million federal funding requested, later possibly $50 to $60 million annually. one New Mexico site eliminated.
