Murillo painting exhibited at Clark Art Institute in Williamstown
The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute opened its first display of a Bartolome Esteban Murillo painting. Yale art historian George Kubler linked the work to the Little Cloister of San Francisco in Seville and argued it depicts the ascent of St. Philip of Heraclea, not Philip II. The piece, with its dramatic lighting and dark tones, marked Murillo’s early style and drew Seville’s attention. The painting remains on permanent exhibition, with hours 10 to 5 daily except Mondays.
