Vermont board discusses banning caging of bears
Vermont Fish and Game Board Chairman Francis J. Murtaugh urged action after bear season to prohibit caging wild animals in Vermont. He cited a growing trade in live bears sold to hunters and released to be chased by dogs. The board, mostly with out-of-state participants, agreed on the need for legislation but will wait until the bear season ends. A Maine law offering a $300 fine for keeping wild animals in cages was mentioned as a possible model.
