Shuffleton the Artist Barber of East Arlington
John Shuffleton, born 1879 in Sunderland, built a life as barber and shopkeeper in East Arlington. He painted as a hobby, helped Post illustrators Rockwell and Hughes, and kept news notes on customers while running a barber business that once charged 35 cents for a haircut. He later pursued painting, remained religious, and valued his daily car trips to the post office for news.
