He traces his work across novels, plays, poems, ballet, painting, and sculpture, noting how his scarecrow theme links Dog Years, The Brass Drum, Cat and Mouse, and the new piece. Grass frames his parables as warnings against police states and blind conformity while likening his storytelling reach to Herman Melville.
