Attempt to Raise Treasure Ship Off California Coast
Efforts to raise a sunken Spanish vessel believed to be Cortez era Trinidad will begin Saturday 3,500 feet off the California coast. Remains of the ship, thought to hold 12 million in gold and artifacts, were found by diver Wilfred Takasate who contracted American Mining & Development Co. to raise it using a sand clearing barge. The Trinidad, built about 1540 in Acapulco, carried Cortez lieutenant Francisco de Ulloa, who according to legend sought the seven cities of Cibola after a dispute with Cortez.
