NIH announces a rubella vaccine breakthrough 90 percent effective in preventing German measles. Field tests were done in Nationalist China with children. further trials are planned in Nashville Los Angeles Cleveland New Orleans Buffalo Camp Lejeune Syracuse New Haven Cincinnati. The vaccine aims to curb birth defect-causing outbreaks seen in 1964 65.
SPACE CENTER Houston UPI reports Apollo 7 pilots staged another orbit around Earth showing ease in space. They described space movement as akin to a monkey in a cage and researchers noted growing confidence for a Christmas moon flight.
At the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation dinner in New York Johnson, Nixon, and Humphrey traded light quips as they sat in formal attire. Johnson teased about retirement and being “the fellow convict,” while Humphrey pressed Nixon on debates. Nixon praised Johnson and spoke of unity as the three men shared the platform amid joking and photo opportunities.
New York State's Court of Appeals unanimously barred Senator Eugene McCarthy from the presidential ballot as the Coalition Party candidate. The ruling favors Hubert Humphrey's prospects for the state's 43 electoral votes and follows a legal challenge by Democrats and McCarthy, represented by Arthur Goldberg.
Reports of a possible breakthrough toward peace in Vietnam spread worldwide with talk of a U.S. offer to halt bombing North Vietnam. Official word said no major breakthrough yet but diplomacy and optimism grew in Washington London Paris Canberra and Lexington.
Washington awaited a favorable reply from Hanoi on a U S plan to halt bombing in North Vietnam without risking American troops. Officials stressed no basic change or breakthrough. the outcome hinged on Hanoi accepting Saigon’s representation in any expanded peace talks and on assurances the ceasefire would not lead to renewed attacks by North Vietnam or the Viet Cong.
Vermont gubernatorial candidate John J. Daley assailed large businessmen for demanding tax concessions from towns and the state. He called such deals giveaways and compared tax stabilization agreements to blackmail, urging a fair tax system. Daley cited National Life Insurance Co. of Montpelier’s tax deal and defended state services while urging responsibility from business leaders.
British ecologist Dr. F Fraser Darling told Williams College that humans, though lord of the living manor, must act as servants of life and exercise restraint toward the natural world. He argued responsible behavior and preservation to pass a clean record to posterity, resisting unlimited exploitation. He spoke during a lecture on ethical responsibility for the environment.
Gov Philip Hoff plans a three week campaign for Hubert Humphrey traveling through Newark Erie and California. The trip is funded by the Democratic National Committee. Vermont GOP figures debated Vietnam peace timing while James Jeffords attacked a proposed uniform state tax rate as unfair. Deane C Davis to meet Richard Nixon in Boston as part of GOP outreach.
