Arlington Library Boosters Run Profitable Book Stand

Arlington’s Martha Canfield Library hosts a weekly outdoor used book table run by retired executives Henry C. Burgess and Finley F. Ellingwood. They’ve raised about $500 for new books, selling most titles for a quarter and three for a quarter for paperbacks, drawing tourists from across the U S and Canada. The duo plans to resume next spring with two carloads of stock after winter shutdowns in Canfield’s barn. They moved to Arlington for retirement in the 1950s and joined the library board, turning a street fair sale into a lasting fundraiser amid a shrinking gift fund from a Dorothy Canfield Fisher endowment.
