Inspections Delay Atomic Sub Building Projects
The Navy said completion of 31 nuclear submarines under construction is delayed by stricter safety inspections and workmanship flaws across all shipyards involved. Ultrasonic testing replaces X rays for flaw detection, with delays varying by contractor and yard. The Polaris and attack subs are built at Portsmouth, Mare Island, Newport News, Groton, Camden, and Pascagoula.
