Syria backs second front with heavy shelling near Beirut
Syrian forces pound Palestinian positions along the Damascus highway southeast of Beirut, with shelling heard 10 miles away. In the south, they captured Roum and Azour, tightening control of the Beirut-Damascus route to potentially starve Sidon and Beirut into submission. A separate Boston report notes UCLA researcher Mary Louise Bunker warns high caffeine intake in children from cola and cocoa may cause nervousness and other effects.

Dean contradicts Ford on Watergate testimony
Dean accuses Gerald Ford of failing to recall aiding an effort to block Watergate probes while Ford back in 1973 said he did not discuss such a plan with Nixon staffers. Ford’s aide Richard Cook denies Dean's charges, calling them lies, with Cook stating he did not contact Ford despite Dean's claims. Dean described Cook as the leg man who briefed Haldeman and Nixon, and suggested Ford would counsel minority members to block hearings.
