Wonderland plan rejected by State Environmental Board
The Vermont Environmental Board unanimously denied a land use permit for Wildlife Wonderland, a 65 acre game farm proposed by Manchester veterinarian James Kinsey on Route 155 between Weston and Mount Holly. The board cited potential air and water pollution, soil erosion, impact on scenic beauty, and risk to public investments. Kinsey’s attorney noted possible appeal to the state Supreme Court after formal findings due by Oct 19. An informal agreement allowed oral conclusions to be issued prior to document preparation.

Vermont Yankee nuclear plant exceeded state guidelines for airborne radioiodine 131 for the third straight quarter. The release, while below federal standards, was 4.9 times the state limit for the quarter ended Sept 30. Plant officials say emissions fell from prior levels and steps were taken to reduce them during a maintenance shutdown and fuel replacement. The State Health Board will review the matter at a Burlington meeting next Thursday.

Ford signs energy reorganization act creating ERDA
President Ford signed the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974 abolishing the Atomic Energy Commission and creating the Energy Research and Development Administration to coordinate energy research and development. The act establishes ERDA alongside the Federal Energy Administration with Morton overseeing policy and Sawhill heading FEA, while six ERDA departments cover nuclear, fossil fuels, environment, advanced energy, national security, and conservation. Wayne and Donna Ringer of Ladd Brook Inn adopted four Korean children from Seoul through Holt Adoption Agency. The siblings Jenny Mi Ae 9, Gail Mi Yung 7, Amy Yung Ah 5, and Mark Yung Nam 4 joined the Ringers Sept. 18, along with the couple’s three other children. Adoption took 11 months, with state social welfare conducting the home study in Vermont while private agencies may also do so.
