Cloudy and mild with high temperatures in the mid 50s to 60. Tonight will be cloudy and not so cold with a chance of showers by late tonight or Friday. Low temperatures in the 50s, little change on Friday. Yesterday's high 58 and low 40. Today at 7 a.m. 48. Sunset 6:17, sunrise 6:58.
At Albany Wallace supporters and protesters clash in front of the State Capitol as Wallace speaks from the steps. The crowd includes radical students, Black Panther supporters, and Eldridge Cleaver buttons, with police on hand but not needed to intervene.
Supporters detractors and onlookers heard a fiery speech condemning anarchists in the street as he denounced the Supreme Court and federal guidelines. The crowd alternated between cheers and boos with some hecklers, many young Negroes, shouting insults during the address.
Bennington town leaders unite to press the Vermont Highway Department to prioritize a beltline around Bennington County. Speaker Campbell argues for completing the beltline now, proposing routes including eastern and western quadrants, while opposing the North Bennington spur as too costly and damaging to the village. North Bennington residents sign a 439 name petition against the spur and fear loss of homes and tax base. The hearing drew over 300 supporters in the Armory as debate focuses on route choices and legislative priorities.
Highway officials described plans for a relocated U S 7 from Bennington to Manchester forming a modern two lane main with land for a four lane future. Present U S 7 would end east of Hunt Street crossing and traffic from the Flats would use Benmont Avenue. Orchard Road would be terminated with a future interchange and a trumpet interchange would channel traffic to the North Bennington spur. A four lane future bridge and ramps were scheduled with a northwest relocation near Wilson's Dade Ranch to improve sight lines at the spur crossing.
Inside report notes the 10th annual Bennington Antiques Show preparations. Vermont Highway Commissioner John Gray outlines next steps after the 222 hearing, including a necessity hearing likely August 1970, followed by compensation hearings and construction contracts possibly awarded December 1971, with road completion slated for July 1974.
Deane C. Davis, GOP gubernatorial hopeful, attended a Highway Department hearing at the Bennington Armory. He said officers made a strong case for reconsidering current plans, but declined further comment. Davis traveled from Rutland to Bennington and back to Montpelier.
Vermont highway officials unveiled a proposed spur to Route 67A that would isolate North Bennington village behind a two lane highway with a central safety island. Overlea Road would be bridged and closed at the tracks, with feeder roads from Mechanic Street Extension and Houghton Street providing limited access to the new route.
