British plan blanket coverage next year
In London this fall genuine Indian blankets will await American tourists as British souvenirs for the bicentennial. The woolen robes copied from 300 year old trade items were worn by settlers and sold widely in 1970s markets. Pendleton Mills keep tradition weaving patterns for Navajo and Pueblo buyers who use blankets in ceremonies and gifts. A rare surviving fragment from an Iroquois funeral shroud helped recreate a trading blanket for the anniversary.
