Cloudy conditions bring showers tonight and Tuesday with cooler air on Tuesday. Low temperatures rise from the upper 40s to the mid 50s tonight. Yesterday's high reached 61 and low 53, with 8 a.m. reading at 61. Sunset is 6:21 p.m. and sunrise 6:59 a.m.
Frantz Frantz, 46, of Woodford, released on $10 000 bail after arraignment in Bennington District Court on second degree murder charges of homicide with malice assault with a deadly weapon and disturbing the peace by use of a deadly weapon. Albert Mallory 41 Brattleboro shot twice in the chest found near Frantz property. Bennington Village Police called at 9 50 p m State Police take charge as scene outside village limits. Mallory was dead on arrival according to police report. See FRANTZ Page 10 Col 5.
A Vermont dedicatory ceremony for Mt Anthony Union High School highlighted community unity and local self government in education. Chief Justice James S Holden recalled Bennington school history and praised cooperation across towns to build the new campus, while Ford Foundation official Edward Mead urged ongoing civic involvement to sustain public education as a universal, evolving system.
Three Vermont politicians spoke at the Mt. Anthony Union High School dedication urging a stronger federal state and local education partnership. Lt. Gov. Daley praised MAUHS as a commitment to top educational facilities and noted state aid and operating-cost support. Rep. Stafford forecast tripled federal education funding after the Vietnam era, warning against cutting education despite a large federal budget deficit.

Indonesia suspends diplomatic relations with Communist China after a cabinet meeting led by acting President Suharto and foreign minister Adam Malik. The move follows student protests and the October 1 embassy attack, with Chinese diplomats held in Jakarta and Indonesian staff in Peking ordered home. Prime Minister Sato of Japan was visiting Jakarta at the time.
Vermont State School Directors Association voted to table a K-12 union district proposal pending a forthcoming report from a state study commission. Critics voiced fears the plan could erode neighborhood and rural schools while supporters pressed for financial incentives to promote district consolidation.
