Hackel faces cool Bennington reception in Vermont governor race

Democratic candidate Stella B. Hackel drew a cool reception in Bennington as she criticized Republican Richard A. Snelling for vague promises and touted her reform plan. She trailed Burns in the September primary, but said she is encouraged by statewide support from Burns supporters. Hackel defended her plan to streamline patronage and cut agencies, promising qualified Vermonters for key posts while stressing lawful actions.

$13 Million Fine Set for Chemical Pollution

Allied Chemical Corporation was fined 13.375 million dollars in federal court for nearly four years of Kepone pollution from its Hopewell Virginia plant into the James River and Chesapeake Bay. Judge Merhige imposed the maximum penalty with no credit for a no contest plea on 940 counts. The actions used the antidumping and water pollution laws of 1899 and 1972. Allied has 90 days to pay.

GAO says Mayaguez incident bypassed diplomacy before attack

A congressionally sponsored GAO study found Ford administration did not fully exhaust diplomatic options before the Mayaguez rescue operation. Vermont Supreme Court bars side judges in murder case

The Vermont Supreme Court ruled non-lawyer assistant Superior Court judges cannot participate in a murder trial. Judge orders McCarthy name on Vermont ballot

UPI reports U.S. District Court Judge James Holden ordered Secretary of State Richard Thomas to place Eugene McCarthy on the November general election ballot under the McCarthy 76 Party after ruling signature certification delay was not McCarthy supporters’ fault. Thomas said the state may appeal but time ran out as absentee ballots must print by Oct 12. he will comply.
