Town seeks waiver for wooden bridges in Bennington

Bennington selectmen asked Town Counsel Norton Barber to write to the Vermont Department of Public Safety seeking a waiver of the statutory 16,000 lb limit on wood floored bridges. The waiver would cover all municipal vehicles including school buses. The push followed an engineer’s report rating the East Road Chapel Road crossover bridge safe for 8,000 lb and a new bridge cost of about 11,000. Residents warned about safety as school routes would force children to walk along crossovers.
