Chicago federal appeals court upholds James R. Hoffa conviction for conspiracy to obtain 25 million dollars in a fraud case. Hoffa faces five years in jail or appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court. He is expected to take the higher court route.
Negotiators in the General Electric contract dispute resumed talks with bleak prospects for a settlement. IUE President Paul Jennings warned a strike could impact defense production, while GE's Philip Moore noted only a few plants are vital to the war effort. The two sides face an Oct. 17 deadline before Taft-Hartley actions could extend work for 80 days.
Hurricane Inez, already striking Florida at four landfalls, churns into the Gulf of Mexico toward a broad target area. At 6 a.m. EDT, Miami Weather Bureau reported the storm near 24.5 N, 83.0 W, about 75 miles offshore.
Bennington Village faces a new lawsuit from Joseph and Monica Corcoran over sewer and water connections for their Morgan Street and Imperial Avenue property. The suit, filed March 31, 1966 and served September 13, repeats claims of denied connections until a mobile home zoning ban could be enacted. The 1963 case favored the village. the appeal was dismissed.
