Vermont Yankee resumes output after four-day shutdown

The Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in Vernon resumed operations at 2:45 am after a nearly four day shutdown caused by a minor steam leak in the high pressure turbine. Officials expect to run at about 68 to 75 percent capacity while reactor physics calculations determine the safe top level under AEC specs. The restart follows a prior seven week shutdown for off gas filtration system installation and replacement of defective fuel rods and flow channels. The new filtration system cost about 10 million dollars and is expected to cut airborne radioactive emissions by about 50 times.
