Youth Charged With Holdup In Bennington Store

Ronald Kevin Brace a 19 year old of Benmont Avenue was charged in Bennington District Court with four counts including two grand larcenies assault with a deadly weapon and assault with intent to rob relating to the November 18 holdup of DeMarco's sporting goods store. He pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity and bail was set at 5000. Brace was to be examined at Waterbury State Hospital for observation after his arrest and imprisonment following an intensive police investigation. Reds Riot In Calcutta

In Calcutta clashes erupted as Communist rioters battled police in downtown areas and a violent brawl broke out in the West Bengal legislative assembly. Police used tear gas and clubs as arrests were made. the assembly adjourned amid claims of unconstitutional action by Speaker Bannerjee and ongoing political upheaval surrounding Chief Minister P. C. Ghosh and the Unified Front.

Bennington Sees Unemployment Jump to 549

Bennington’s unemployment rose by 141 last week to 549, the highest in the state, with 289 more insured claimants than a year ago. Burlington 440, Barre-Montpelier 432, St. Albans 430, and Rutland 314 also reported jobless totals. statewide claims reached 3,068, up 253 from the prior week and 568 over last year. The insured rate stood at 2.6 percent versus 2.3 percent a year ago.

Selectmen Have Jobs Open but No Applicants Yet

Bennington selectmen met after the death of Richard Van Santvoord and observed a moment of silence. No one has shown interest in filling the vacancy. appointments will be made in coming weeks. Joseph Higgins said the board would consider names submitted by the town Democratic Committee.

London reports Chancellor James Callaghan resigned following pound devaluation. Home Secretary Roy Jenkins named to replace him in a straight swap, with Prime Minister Harold Wilson announcing after Queen Elizabeth II’s approval.
