John Wayne Changes Style In New Movie
Hollywood correspondent Vernon Scott reports John Wayne, at 61, breaking his usual Western hero mold in True Grit. He roars on set after quitting smoking, recalls past health scare, and tackles Rooster Cogburn with a gritty, lungy effort. Wayne speaks vividly about altitude filming at 7,000 feet and higher, delivering a rough, humorous portrait of a hard drinking, fearless character. The piece notes his return from location work and his shift from classic white hat roles to a rugged, unpredictable persona.
