Democrats Campaign Finance Plan Sparks Nixon Dilemma
The Senate includes a taxpayer funded presidential campaign provision, risking a veto on Nixon’s tax cut bill or enabling about 20.4 million dollars for major parties. The measure would tax checkoffs directing 1 dollar per individual to a candidate or nonpartisan fund, with Wallace potentially receiving 6.3 million and third party candidates reimbursed by vote share. Republicans oppose the plan, while Democrats push to use it as leverage against Nixon and to boost party coffers ahead of 1972.

Minnesota Proposes Storing Radioactive Water Instead of River Dump
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency proposes that NSP store radioactive water from Monticello in railway tank cars rather than release it into the Mississippi River. A meeting with state agencies and MECCA is planned as NSP notes releases were within limits. Water discharges totaled about 19,300 gallons containing iodine 131 and cobalt 58, sparking concern from MECCA and city officials who halted intake gates as a precaution.
