President Johnson testified to the Warren Commission that he heard the fatal shots in Dallas and was knocked down in his seat by a Secret Service agent who vaulted over the back seat and sat on him as the commision questioned the assassination.
The Supreme Court rejected a challenge to the phrase under God in the pledge of allegiance. The New York plaintiffs argued it violated rights, but the order offered no opinion. The decision follows prior rulings against prayer and Bible reading in public schools.
Dallas marked the hour of 1 o clock with churches full and 200 spectators in the sunlit plaza near the underpasses. The scene recalled the Oswald Kennedy shooting a year ago as residents observed in solemn silence.

Congolese army advances four hours by road toward Stanleyville where American missionary Paul Carlson faces a rebel death sentence. Carlson, 36, is reportedly alive as talks in Kenya pursue hostages. Premier Tshombe warns rebels to surrender or face destruction and vows to relaunch Stanleyville’s economy.
U.S. Ambassador Maxwell D. Taylor told Life magazine correspondents in Vietnam that the South Viet Nam guerrilla war outcome is in doubt and that expanding the war beyond South Viet Nam could affect its resolution. He called the battle a great one and warned against fearing or surrendering.
Windsor County remains top in Vermont deer kills with 1,972 as hunters push toward the 1962 record of 12,497. The deer season runs through Sunday, while 230 black bears have been bagged since opening. Fourteen out of state hunters were fined $1,400 for alleged Fish and Game violations after a Rockingham Route 91 stop.
A Trans World Airlines Boeing 707 carrying 72 people exploded and burned while taxiing for take-off at Rome Fiumicino Airport. At least 50 may be dead, 19 survived, with survivors including Captain Vernon Lowell. The aircraft originated in Kansas City with stops in Chicago, New York, Paris, and Milan, heading to Athens and Cairo.

Elizabeth H. Rogers 54 of Bennington died after a two car collision on Route 2 near Gardner Massachusetts. She was en route to Cambridge and may have dozed at the wheel. Her husband Thomas F. Rogers a Bijur plant manager was away at a ski coaches meeting in Hanover New Hampshire. The second driver Warren L. Marcy 39 of South Royalton Vermont was uninjured. Mrs Rogers was active in civic groups including the Bennington Girl Scout Council and Bromley Ski Club. Funeral services were held in Boston with cremation today. There is no Bennington funeral planned at present.
