Vermont man saves old cemeteries with a statewide push
Leon Dean, 83, founder of the Vermont Old Cemetery Association, has built a 700 member group devoted to rescuing decaying graveyards. His drive spurred similar efforts in Maine and Wisconsin, with projects to log every graveyard in Vermont, chart burials, and offer a 25 dollar incentive to fix sites. Dean cites vandalism and neglect as atrocities and recounts poignant tales from early Vermont, including a graveyard created after a flood and a grandfather’s stone unearthed during fox hunting.
