Selectman who quit changes his mind chairs a meeting
Robert Grinold, who last week announced his resignation from Wilmington's board, chaired an informal selectmen session Thursday night though no meeting was scheduled. With Kingsley duMont away and Merrill Haynes not asserting a quorum, Grinold claimed he withdrew his resignation four days after filing it, while others disputed his action and questioned the legal status of his signature on minutes and orders.

Vermont hardwood forests face a miller crisis
Vermont officials warn of a surge in Bruce spanworm moths, nicknamed millers, in hardwood forests this fall. The adult male moths swarm near light sources while females, wingless, crawl up tree trunks to lay eggs. Eggs hatch into inchworms in spring, feeding on sugar maple and other hardwoods, potentially weakening trees if outbreaks recur.
