New Phase Seen in Viet Fighting
UPI dispatch reports a shift in the Vietnam War as North Vietnamese regulars are sent into battle in stages toward South Vietnam. The 1st Cavalry Division destroyed the 66th Regiment at Chu Pong Mountain, while other regiments reportedly move along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. U.S. commanders plan to crush incoming regulars to weaken Viet Cong bases and enable Vietnamese forces to control more villages, despite the difficulty of holding settlements against large regular outfits.
