New Delhi AP says Chinese forces launched a large attack on Indian troops near Walong in the east Himalayas. Indian advances previously took some Chinese outposts. fighting involved superior Chinese numbers and followed an Indian probing policy to disrupt Chinese consolidation.
Bernard Mayer and family of nine lost their home on White Chapel Road in a Thursday fire. Local groups coordinate food, clothing, and cash collections at the Vermont Gas Corp. and through Be nnington schools and residents. The Mayers secured a new four room apartment on County Street and receive ongoing support from neighbors and the Bennington Brush Co. workers and Red Cross blankets.
In New York the NAACP and labor leaders sever ties amid a dispute over attacks on discrimination in unions. Herbert Hill, the AFL-CIO labor secretary, is accused of making baseless charges and seeking to strip unions of bargaining rights via NLRB actions.
Rescue planes and ships searched the stormy Atlantic northeast of Bermuda for 18 missing crewmen after their lifeboat capsized in high seas from the Greek freighter Captain George. Seven survivors were picked up. the 18 remained unaccounted for as a second vessel, the Curlew, capsized nearby.

Donald Arnold a Vermont state senator and Bell executives told reporters Telstar communications satellite will be destroyed within two years. He said a government AT&T agreement exists to shut off Telstar which was built as a two year prototype. He also noted a sequence of satellites will provide 24 hour service replacing Telstar.
Maine diging out from a heavy snowstorm that blanketed the state with up to 12 inches. Coastal and central regions faced paralyzed communities as highways closed and rescue crews cleared drifts. State police reported numerous spinouts and stuck vehicles but no serious injuries.
