Polaris A1S rocket test lights up sky over Cape Kennedy

A Polaris A1S rocket launched from Cape Kennedy at 5 28 p m EST completed a 460 mile suborbital flight testing a star sensor guidance device aimed at steering future mobile missiles to targets. The five year old missile, a veteran of sea patrols on America s first Polaris submarines, streaked through a bright smoky trail as the star sensor tracked the north star and then set its sights on a second star before the powered flight ended over the Atlantic.

Rhodesia Sanctions Unite U S Britain in Push Over Rhodesia

The United States and Britain joined forces to pressure Rhodesia after its declaration of independence. Ambassador Arthur J. UPI reports Senator George Aiken and four colleagues depart Washington for a month of inspection trips to Europe and Southeast Asia. Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield heads the five-man team, with Inouye Boggs and Muskie joining. President Johnson asked the trip. they will return before Christmas and report to the president with no press briefings.

American social worker killed in Viet Cong ambush

In the Mekong delta 24 year old American civilian volunteer Peter Hunting of Oklahoma City was shot five times in the head and ten more rounds fired into his body as Viet Cong ambushed his car near Vinh Long. Hunting, a regional IVS supervisor on his second Viet Nam tour, rode with two Vietnamese when the attack happened about 70 miles southwest of Saigon as a government convoy passed. The Vietnamese passengers were unharmed and the Viet Cong were suspected. The private Peace Corps style IVS employs young volunteers earning about 77 dollars monthly.

LOUDONVILLE NY Siena College students gathered at Gibbons Hall to protest the curtailment of civil rights and social work by Rev Bonaventure O'Brien OFM a theology instructor and dormitory prefect. The Franciscan order limited his activities to teaching after he backed poll watchers for the election law and criticized Albany politics. New Superintendent Hired To Succeed Allan J. Heath

Howard F. Kelley named chief administrative officer for Mt Anthony Union and Bennington Graded School Districts. The 35 year old will report to both boards, with a $61 000 annual salary shared by the districts. Kelley, from Wolfeboro New Hampshire, replaces retired Allan J. Heath and is set to begin January 1. He brings extensive NH district experience and a family of five.

Tornadoes Strike Mid-West

Tornadoes ripped across northern Illinois and Indiana killing at least one person and injuring more than 50. A woman died as twisters flattened homes near Joliet and Channahon while power outages hit a nuclear plant six miles east of Morris. Commonwealth Edison reported damage to a transmission tower near the plant and hospitals logged dozens of injuries.
