Hoosick Falls Central School District voters rejected a $1.28 million addition by 512 to 470 with 20 void ballots. Turnout reached 1,002 as machine ballots were counted, and officials attributed part of the result to an anonymous letter.
With two days left before Senate debate the Haynsworth nomination shows 11 Republicans and 8 Democrats undecided in a UPI poll. If a roll were taken now 37 would vote yes and 44 no. Nixon remains confident of confirmation. A letter opposing Haynsworth cites civil rights and labor record and financial interest in cases. Local officials call the letter undemocratic and misleading. Superintendent Philip Leonard defends the school proposal and criticizes the mailed letter. The school board plans further action at its November 18 meeting.
United Press International reports Veterans Day observances amid Nixon’s appeal to the Silent Majority and a planned Washington antiwar march. Many groups stage loyalty rallies while others join demonstrations against Vietnam policy. Notables include Sen. John Tower as Washington speaker and Omar Bradley addressing Los Angeles crowds.
Vermont politics heated as Lt Gov Hayes and aide Charles Butler oppose Gov Davis on the Vietnam moratorium. Butler plans to attend Washington rally to show non extremism, while Davis faces GOP criticism over Haynsworth, and a separate liquor theft probe unfolds at Burlington’s railway yard involving unopened bottles and truck seals.
In early hours, three world headquarters targeted in seemingly coordinated blasts as a protest against Vietnam War and big corporations. One person injured. warnings prior reduced toll. An unsigned letter claimed responsibility, naming Chase Manhattan, RCA, and General Motors. FBI opened investigation.
Vermont Governor Deane C. Davis urged national unity amid Vietnam protests at a "Support Your President" rally in Montpelier. He warned anti moratorium supporters may prolong the war and called for broad participation by officials to back President Nixon's policy. The event drew about 3000 officials, with politicians including Lt. Gov. Thomas L. Hayes facing the Washington march for peace.
Central Vermont Public Service crews repaired two 44 000 volt transmission insulators damaged by gunfire cutting power to North Bennington the Flats Mount Anthony Union High School Putnam Memorial Hospital and the Silk Road substation. Chief Jack Lowre said deer season shooters caused the damage and that the lines serve Shaftsbury Arlington Manchester Lyons District and western Bennington.

Senator George D. Aiken and Senator Winston Prouty endorsed James Oakes for the Vermont federal judgeship vacancy created by the death of Ernest W. Gibson. Aiken praised Oakes as a top Vermont lawyer from the northwestern region and noted broad backing from state lawyers. He also discussed the Haynsworth Supreme Court nomination and reserved his judgment on confirmation.
The Vermont Environmental Control Commission debated presenting all recommendations as an omnibus bill or as a package. Richard Snelling and Walter Blucher urged a comprehensive approach while others favored selective adoption. Proposals cover developments above 2,500 feet and pesticides with Blucher urging bold rules and data driven permits.
